THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL ARBORETUM In January 2003. Sue Robinson visited the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffordshire: The sections of the Burma Railway and the Sumatra Railway were a poignant reminder of the atrocities of World War 2. The chapel was a wonderful and peaceful place to go and reflect, to gather ones thoughts after seeing the harrowing sight of so much suffering. The section of railway is done in such a way that one imagines that the prisoners have just left for the night and will be back in a few hours for thier torment to begin for yet another hot and endless day. The visitor centre is well set out and has many things of interest to buy or just browse, the lady who I talked to was well informed and sympathetic, she even ran the tape again in the chapel for me as I had arrived to late to hear the 11am last post. There is excellent provision made for elderly and disabled visitors. Visit their web site: www.nationalmemorialarboretum.co.uk
